The word “cancer” itself can evoke fear in many people. Fear, pain, and misery are just but a few of what one might associate cancer with. This was true for myself until I interned at 365 Cancer Prevention Society (365CPS). Initially, I was apprehensive when I found out my internship placement at 365CPS as I was unfamiliar with anything related to cancer. Thoughts like ‘How am I going to relate to them?’ and ‘What if I say something inappropriate?’ were running through my mind. However, I knew I ought to keep my mind open, while taking up the opportunity to learn as much.
Some might say that cancer destroys a person but the members of 365CPS showed me otherwise. It was only after interacting with them that made me truly understand why they are referred to as fighters. As much as I have hoped to make a difference in their lives, they have inspired me deeply with their perseverance and radiating smile. Prior to this internship experience, I probably wouldn’t have given much thought to anyone battling cancer. Now, I am able to empathise with cancer fighters and their family members.
Throughout my internship in 365CPS as a counselling intern, I had many opportunities to work with the various departments which allowed me to understand their unique roles in the Society. I was able to gain valuable insights into the social service industry which would help me make an informed career decision. Even though my time with 365CPS has come to an end, I have acquired invaluable knowledge and lessons that hold true to my heart. Thank you 365CPS for the meaningful time and the truly amazing experience.
