My name is Agnes, I am 53 years old this year. I was diagnosed with Thymoma Cancer back in 2011. I kept having fever and the fever persisted despite taking painkillers and Panadol. I didn’t feel well and my gut feeling told me to seek professional consultation at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. I went for an X-Ray and they discovered that there were white spots on my lung soon after, I was diagnosed with Thymoma Cancer.
I went through a very dark period in 2016, when I had to go for a neck operation and there were holes and metals inserted in my spine to support my spinal cord because the tumour had damaged my spinal cord. That was a major operation and it has a very high risk and I was very afraid. I was also overwhelmed by the sheer amount of doctor appointments. I also couldn’t find a job as there was a limited position available due to my neck brace which I needed to put on for support after my surgery. The worst part is that I have to sleep in a special position! Thinking back, the only reason I got through those challenges was that I had very good family support. I am also religious so I pray to God and I had a close group of friends who will pray for me and support me in ways that they can.
During the year 2020, the tumour has expanded in size and the doctor suggested doing chemotherapy, and it ended up with some complications. In January 2021, there was a pustule discovered at the right side of my neck. I was originally scheduled for chemotherapy back in July 2021 but it was postponed as they discovered a new pustule in October 2021. My chemotherapy is still being put on hold and under review until my next medical appointment in April 2022.
Cancer really opened my eyes and changed my perspective. I faced mobility issues after my surgery and my spine was greatly impacted as well as my right hand was down with low strength and numbness. My neck has a limited range of motion which is very uncomfortable. I adjusted my perspective, expectations, and priority in life. I had to slow down my pace in life, practice time management, put in the effort to have a work-life balance, have a good lifestyle that promotes healthy living.
I come to know of 365CPS from my husband’s church friend. They brought me to 365CPS. My first foray into 365CPS was when I joined their top ten cancer fighter program. It taught me a lot and it was very challenging as well. I also enjoyed the health talks conducted at the society, there was a variety of them ranging from healthy cooking to professional doctors coming in to share about specific cancers knowledge. My most memorable activity would be the outings organized by 365CPS. In recent times, I really enjoy coming to the Kopi Chat which is a special program curated by the Care Leaders in 365CPS. I was also invited to join Kampung Cares which is another program that made me reflect on my life. A lot of simple nugget-sized concepts were being taught to us which were applicable in my daily life.
Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the donors and volunteers. Thank you for helping the cancer fighters in terms of volunteering your time or your donation.
