Are you getting tired of the ongoing changes and restrictions that have been put in place to manage the pandemic outbreak? This could be one of the symptoms of pandemic fatigue.

What is Pandemic Fatigue?

Pandemic fatigue is a feeling of exhaustion from the changes that the pandemic has brought about, as well as feeling a sense of dread and irritation with the constant news of the pandemic, according to an article published by Channel NewsAsia.

It has been 18 months since the outbreak of Covid-19 and we are getting somewhat battle-weary. We have been consistently challenged to adapt to changes and yet, our lives have not fully returned to normal. As we continue to cope with the uncertainties ahead, these constant changes can result in depersonalisation, emotional exhaustion and reduction of own abilities.

Recognising the Signs and Symptoms of Pandemic Fatigue

With the increased isolation from our loved ones, colleagues or even friends that we used to connect with, the fatigue caused by the pandemic can cause one to feel tired emotionally, psychologically, socially or spiritually. It is therefore important to recognise the symptoms of pandemic fatigue.

Below are some of the signs and symptoms that we should be looking out for:

  • Feeling negative about the pandemic situation.
  • Easily affected by things that do not affect you in the past.
  • Feeling nervous or unsettled.
  • Become more impatient with those around us.
  • Sleep disturbances or have nightmares.
  • Difficulty in concentration.
  • Becoming hypervigilant or avoidant about potential danger.
  • Feelings of loss, sadness or hopelessness.
  • Worsening physical complaints.
  • Having thoughts of harming oneself or others.

What Can Help to Manage Pandemic Fatigue?

It is paramount to look after our wellbeing by finding a balance in our lives.  Here are some tips on managing pandemic fatigue.

  • Accepting our negative emotions.
  • Be kind to yourself.
  • Keep a routine.
  • Monitor your social media / online activities.
  • Reconnect with those around us.
  • Practice relaxation techniques.
  • Eat and sleep well.
  • Seek professional help.

As a whole, when our wellbeing is good, we can then regain control over our physical and mental health to lead a more meaningful life.
