I was always curious to find out more on how it feels like to work and serve in a non-profit organisation like 365 Cancer Prevention Society. For the past 26 years, I have worked in various accounting roles across a wide spectrum of industry sectors, until a mild medical condition landed me in Changi General Hospital for rehab and physiotherapy treatments. During my recovery and rehabilitation periods, I started asking myself whether it is an opportune time to do a career switch and do something which will offer more satisfaction and meanings to my daily works.

I recalled my happy days serving as a volunteer in my church where we outreached to the senior citizen living in the Dakota areas. Every month, we will look out for volunteer opportunities such as being a befriender to the elderly or delivered food and Fairprice vouchers to their home together with our youth volunteers. At the end of each event, I will feel very fulfilled and contented, being able to see their smiles and true happiness is indeed a priceless reward to volunteers like us from the church.

So one fine day after my rehabilitation period, I harboured this thought of marrying a paying full time job with a volunteer’s role in it, so that I can continue to serve the patients and community in my day time job. Thankfully, I had found that job as a volunteer management executive in 365 Cancer Prevention Society. I am very excited to come on board, and looking forward to work with the volunteers in our volunteer works such as events and activities, kitchen, visitation/ befriender, creative media and office administration.

Volunteering is important as it offers essential help to worthwhile causes, cancer patients in need, and contributes to community development by committing time and effort for the benefits of the society. I sincerely hope that more people will come forward to volunteer their services and talents to make a real difference in the lives of the cancer patients and their families. You will be richly rewarded with benefits of volunteerism such as learning new skills and experiences, meeting people with common interests and passions who could go on to become great friends.
