I am currently volunteering with 365CPS. I had previously helped out with the centre’s activities and now, occasionally with the kitchen and admin side. For me, volunteering enables me to be in a position where I may be able to positively impact the life of a beneficiary and this gives me a sense of fulfilment and motivation to continue my volunteering journey.
While 365CPS is not the first organisation I have volunteered at, it was the first one where I actually signed up by myself and not through school or CCA. It was the best decision I have ever made. The 365CPS team has been very supportive and caring of their beneficiaries and consistently do their best to help their ‘survivors’, which inspires me to emulate their behaviour as well. For example, there are Calligraphy classes, Karaoke sessions, Zumba sessions and Ukulele classes organised for the ‘survivors’ and I am very heartened to befriend the ‘survivors’ and join them for the classes.
A mentor once told me that ‘Life is only that short and it’s how you intend to spend it that makes the difference. No one knows when our time is truly up, but someone will know if you have ever made an impact on their lives’. It is unfortunate that I couldn’t be there to bid him farewell in his final moments, but I do hope that he knows that he has left a lasting impression on me and I hope to pass on this spirit to others. While volunteering may not yield tangible benefits eg money, but it forges beautiful memories with the people you befriend and a sense of satisfaction that money can never provide. It also teaches you about patience and empathy which will help shape your experience and perspectives.
