What are the benefits in giving? Read up to find out more.

Why do we give? How do we choose which cause to give to? What are the benefits in giving? I’m sure some of us would have entertained these questions in our heads when we encounter donation appeals from different organisations that support different causes. Giving comes in various forms – monetary donations, volunteering our time, or donation-in-kind. What then are the reasons people give?

1) Being advocates of a certain cause
Every charity communicates a strong cause that they support – wildlife conservation, children protection against abuse, cancer prevention, etc. Our hearts resonate with certain causes and propel us to contribute in every little way we can. Our life experiences mould our beliefs and these beliefs drive us to give as a form of support to those who need it.

2) Making a difference
Giving, be it monetary or non-monetary, small or big amounts, will undeniably make a difference in the society we live in. A small donation could sustain a low-income family for a few days; a pledge to be eco-friendly gives Mother Earth a little breathing space; and a volunteering hand could bring a smile unto a senior citizen’s face.

3) Being a role model to future generations
Our actions and teachings shape and nurture future generations. When we give, we teach our children that we live in a tight-knitted community where a little love shown to those around us goes a long way. We educate them that we are not merely selfish creatures that roam the earth, but rather, we are emotional beings with a heart for the world.

4) Motivating others to give as well
When we give, we set an example to our social circle of family and friends and motivate them to stop sitting on the fence but to contribute to causes they care about as well. Be a trendsetter! Who says giving should be humble? Shout about your giving and challenge your family and friends to do the same; the more the merrier, right?

5) Of course, we are practical humans and we love tax deductions!
Last, but never the least, giving in terms of monetary donations to IPCs in Singapore allows us to enjoy 250% tax deductions. I mean, who doesn’t enjoy a little return of the love we give?
