For my 20-week Student Internship Program, I had the incredible opportunity to intern with 365 Cancer Prevention Society (365CPS). 21st April marked the first day of my internship journey; I was extremely grateful that I was able to work in the nutrition-related industry as not many of my classmates were given a chance to do so. In the beginning, I was unsure of what to anticipate and had many misconceptions about the dietetics field, but I’ve come a long way since then. Even though I didn’t visit the office on my first day at work, I received a warm welcome from everyone working at 365CPS via text. I met the two dietitians later that afternoon, where I was briefed on what was to come throughout my internship, and I was also given some study material on cancer.
Whilst working closely alongside the dietitians, I was exposed to all five aspects of community nutrition (Clinical, Community, Marketing creations, Foodservice & Others). I helped complete bigger projects like the kitchen audits and surveys for our day-care members and our cooks across all 3 social service centres, while completing my individual assignments like blog posts and social media content (i.e. Instagram, Facebook & TikTok). The highlight of my internship was when I sat in for nutritional consults. I watched how the dietitians interact and communicate with the members to help them adapt nutritionally during the cancer treatment and recovery period. I also got to attend more onsite events, like the monthly love lunches, workshops and nutrition talks. From these events, I learned more about the services the society offers to its members and the public.
Other than gaining nutritional knowledge, I learnt skills that could only be picked up through experience. I gained confidence in speaking up, crafting emails properly and building meaningful professional connections. I also got to enhance my time management and effective communication skills.
I want to thank 365 Cancer Prevention Society for creating such a nurturing environment for my development and providing me with such an invaluable learning experience during my time as a Dietetics intern. The dietitians contributed a significant amount of their time and effort to guide and mentor me. I am truly appreciative to have been able to work under their direction and care. I would also like to use this opportunity to express gratitude to all the employees of 365 Cancer Prevention Society for giving me such a memorable experience.
