Volunteering Journey with 365 Cancer Prevention Society

When I learnt that 365CPS also needed volunteers for editing content on their online platforms, I thought that it would be rewarding and meaningful if I could make use of my writing skills to contribute to their cause.

I am Bena, a volunteer who has been editing content for 365CPS. I joined the team at the start of this year and have mainly worked on articles in which patients with cancer share their experiences with 365CPS.

A friend introduced me to 365CPS when I was researching on charity organisations for my company’s corporate social responsibility (more commonly known as CSR) activity last year. Due to COVID-19, interactions at the service centres were very limited and we didn’t proceed with our plans to collaborate. However, when I learnt that 365CPS also needed volunteers for editing content on their online platforms, I thought that it would be rewarding and meaningful if I could make use of my writing skills to contribute to their cause.

As a medical writer, part of my work involves writing on cancer-related topics, including publishing the latest clinical trial results in medical journals and preparing slide decks for doctors to share the latest trends with others in the field. Most of the content that I prepare is technical so volunteering with 365CPS has provided me with the opportunity to be exposed to other styles of writing as well as learn more about the fight against cancer from the various perspectives of different patients.

I know of several close relatives and friends who have battled cancer so I understand that everyone’s journey is different and can often be lonely. Hence, I find it very meaningful to be part of 365CPS’ efforts in providing a platform for patients with cancer to share their experiences and provide emotional support for each other through their inspiring stories. Volunteering with 365 CPS has not only honed my writing skills, but also motivated me to take more active measures to lead a healthier lifestyle, such as exercising more regularly.

To all patients with cancer and their caregivers, stay strong and reach out for support if you need it. 365CPS offers a wide range of resources and services to help you cope with difficult times – you are not alone. Here’s a shout out to all the volunteers and instructors at 365CPS who have brought solace to the lives of many patients. Hope to meet everyone soon!
