Types of Oesophageal Cancer<\/strong><\/h3>\n

To understand more about the risk factors of oesophageal cancer, we have to first understand the structure of the oesophagus. The oesophagus consists of three layers: the mucosa, submucosa, and muscle layer, along with an outer covering known as the adventitia. There are two main types of oesophageal cancer:<\/p>\n

  1. Adenocarcinoma:<\/strong> This form of cancer originates in the glandular cells lining the oesophagus, often found in the lower section.<\/li>\n
  2. Squamous Cell Carcinoma:<\/strong> Develops in the squamous cells lining the oesophagus, this usually occurs in the middle to upper parts.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    There are other, less common types of oesophageal cancer, such as small cell carcinoma, lymphoma, neuroendocrine tumours, and gastrointestinal stromal tumours.<\/p>\n

    Now that we understand the different types of oesophageal cancer arising from the structure of the oesophagus, let\u2019s learn about the risk factors for each of the two main types of the cancer.
