These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>White blood cells which help fight infections and diseases<\/li>\n<li>Red blood cells (haemoglobin) which carry oxygen throughout our body and give you energy<\/li>\n<li>Platelets are cells which help blood to clot and prevent bleeding<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Leukaemia starts when a young white blood cell \u2018misbehaves\u2019, grows out of control and crowds out the healthy cells. This cell is called the leukaemia cell or \u2018blast\u2019. Blasts can also destroy healthy cells around them. Because leukaemia starts in the bone marrow where all cells are made, it is known as a blood cancer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are the common signs and symptoms?<\/strong><br \/>\nAs leukaemia cells crowd out or destroy healthy cells, you will see signs and symptoms of leukaemia such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Persistent fever or frequent infections (low white blood cell)<\/li>\n<li>Looking pale, tired or easily fatigued (low red blood cells)<\/li>\n<li>Flat red spots under the skin called petechiae<\/li>\n<li>Bruising easily<\/li>\n<li>Unexplained bleeding from the gums or nose (low platelets)<\/li>\n<li>Swollen lymph nodes usually in neck or groin area<\/li>\n<li>Pain in leg, arms or knee<\/li>\n<li>Poor appetite or loss of weight<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Having one of more of these symptoms doesn\u2019t mean that your child has leukaemia, as they can also be caused by other common conditions which are not serious.
